Sydney Moneke Shares Washington D.C. Youth Tour Experience and Encourages Students to Apply for 2025

November 01, 2024

My experience at the 2024 NRECA Youth Tour can only be described as transformative. The trip brought together a dozen high schoolers from all corners of Oregon. As we explored some of the most important sites in our nation—the White House, Library of Congress, Capitol Hill—the connections we formed are perhaps more memorable than the glittering lights of downtown D.C.

My fellow Oregon delegates came from all corners of the state, each with a crystal clear passion for helping their community and a determination for success.

Despite differences in our lives, the connections formed over the seven days in D.C. will continue to last a lifetime. In addition to exploring the ins and outs of the political epicenter of the world, the trip allowed for the youth voice to shine on the highest level. As we spoke with legislators on Capitol Hill, we were able to voice our opinions and gain firsthand insight into a career in United States politics.

At its core, the Youth Tour serves to give high school students the opportunity to experience our nation’s capital. The photos from countless mesmerizing sights will forever be saved in my phone to commemorate the trip, but it is the memories of connections formed that will outlive any photograph. I could not be more grateful to have had this life-changing experience and I highly encourage any interested students to apply for next year’s Youth Tour.
